Need advice on Yamaha PCY150s Settings

Postby magpies » Sun Feb 27, 2011 4:06 pm

I am using a Yamaha PCY150s 3 zone cymbal as a ride, managed to come up with these settings largely by trial and error and from tips and advice on the forum.

Channel 6 Ride B

M Note G#8 Superior Drummer Ride Shank
Note G#8
A Note G#8
P Note G#8

Curve Log 1
Comp lvl 0
Level shift 0
Xtalk 3
Xtalk Group 0
Threshold 30
Gain 3
Hi level auto no
Hi level 201
Retrigger 8
Dyn level 1
Dyn time 4
Min scan 20

Dual head yes

Channel 7 Ride E

M Note G8 Superior Drummer Ride Edge
Note G8
A Note G8
P Note G8

Curve Log 1
Comp lvl 0
Level shift 0
Xtalk 2
Xtalk Group 0
Threshold 38
Gain 4
Hi level auto no
Hi level 150
Retrigger 20
Dyn level 7
Dyn time 16
Min scan 30

Type Switch

MB Note F#8 Superior Drummer Bell Shank
B Note F#8
AB Note F#8
DB Note G8
PB Note F#8

B Threshold 17

Generally speaking it works really well and there is a choke function on the edge only.

However the bell occasionally triggers the shank instead of the bell, maybe 1 time in 20 seemingly at random

and all heavy hits on the edge trigger the shank as well

I have the level adjustment on the cymbal about 15 degrees rotation up from the lowest level. This was the lowest I could get it making sure that light taps on all 3 zones register as midi input to Megadrum.

These settings are usable but any ideas on how to improve the performance still further would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any help or comments.

I'm afraid the issue is more likely due to the edge and bell switches not being ideal, i.e. not making an electrical contact on every hit. On my PCY-130s I do experience the same.

On a side note - you may want to raise Gain on Ride B (only on Ride b!) to get higher HighLevels on both Ride B and Ride E to improve dynamic ranges. You may need to raise Threshold on Ride B (only Ride B) to avoid false triggering.

Many thanks Dimitri, I will try that.

Any idea why the DB note is G8 same as the edge ? I didn't choose that. It just appeared. Is that Ok or should I set it the same as the bell ?

It is a dampened note, i.e. a note played when you hold the edge switch pressed and hit the pad/cymbal. By default it is equal to Note of the Bow/Head input.
