It seems to me that the most expensive part of building a MegaDrum kit would be the actual pads that one will hit as triggers. I've seen many articles on how to mod existing pads, but the pads themselves cost at least $40 for just one stinkin' pad! Has anyone here tried creating their own drum pads out of scratch material?

I'm on the fence about building this project, or just buying a really crappy electronic drum kit; the both seem to come out costing about the same, unless there is a good way to make cheap, durable pads yourself.

The more difficult thing will be to build a good quality rack with all the clamps and rods to hold the pads.
I ended up buying this kit http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_mps1 ... er_set.htm , converted all pads to mesh heads and threw away a crappy drum module. There are several clones of the same kit you can get in states, e.g. OSP DD-502 or a slightly different Simmons SD5K Electronic Drum Kit

i bought 4 X 10" and 2 X 12" rims from my local drum shop for $50
i bought a heap of lugs and bolts from ebay for $30
now im looking for some pvc pipe or i will roll some plywood for shells.
