Need Advice on Hit Hat Settings

Postby magpies » Sun Mar 06, 2011 12:46 pm

I am using a Hart Dynamics E-cymbal 2 hi hat and E-pedal stand. I set it up to work in the default Megadrum channels and came up with the following settings to use with Superior Drummer 2. The settings are based on advice from the forum and bit of trial and error;

Hi Hat Pedal
Type F.Contr
Linear
Chck delay 17
Alt in no
CC value 4
Lvl rev no
Soft chick no
Levels auto no
Low level 24
Hi Level 125
Open level 8
Closed level 100
ShrtChckTh 115
LngChckTh 16
HH input 2
all bow notes C1
all edge notes D1
Chick A0
Splsh B0

This seems to work great, articulating the hi hat in superior drummer from full tight closed to full open and excellent ChicK and Splash sensitivity.

Ch02 Hi Hat B
Mnote C1
Note C1
A Note C1
P note C1
Ch 10
special no
Linear
Comprlvl 0
lvlshift 0
xtalk 4
xtalk group 0
Threshold 8
Gain 0
Hi level auto no
Hi level 600
retrigger 1
dyn level 6
dyn time 60
min scan 16
dual head yes

Channel 3 Hi Hat E

M Note D1
note D1
A note D1
P note D1
channel 10
special no
Linear
comprlvl 0
lvl shift 0
x talk 1
x talk group 0
threshold 30
gain 0
hilevel auto no
hi level 501
retrigger 1
dyn level 6
dyn time 60
min scan 16
type piezo
mb note C-1
b note C-1
ab note C-1
DB note D1
pb note C-1
dual mid point 15
dual mid width 15
Bthreshold X

The bow works great but the edge is really hard to trigger and always triggers the Bow as well. The only way to get a low level edge note is to hit the edge very hard and then you also get a full level Bow note.

I think I may have got these settings badly wrong and would welcome any advice to sort them out.

Many thanks for your help

I would recommend raising Threshold on HiHat Bow if both the edge and the bow are triggered when you hit the edge and maybe raise Retrigger to ~10 for both the bow and the edge.

Hi Dimitri

I raised retrigger to 10 on both channels and then raised the hi hat bow threshold level in stages as high as I could get keeping good bow triggering, then lowered the edge threshold bit by bit to try and find best balance.

The best I could get was 75 on the bow and 15 on the edge. Then I got mostly edge notes from the edge and mostly bow from the bow.

However I noticed that the edge output was way lower so I did a hi level auto check on both channels

The bow came out 959 and the edge 74, does that seem strange ? Could I have a fault ?

Anyway now I had good strong signals from both channels but still a fair bit of crosstalk between them.

Any ideas how I could solve that ?

Could it be because I set the dual mid width to 15 earlier to try and get an edge output ?

I still have gain set to 0 on each channel.

Any help would be gratefully received.

There is definitely something wrong with the edge signal. Is the edge sensor really a piezo?

First, you need to figure out why the signal on the edge is so weak.

Hi, I changed the setting to switch but no matter how high I raise the bow threshold I cant get an edge output. Any ideas what else to try ?

Read http://www.megadrum.info/content/pads-settings about Threshold for switch Rim/Edge inputs.

Thanks Dimitri, reading that gave me an idea. Will I need to have aftertouch enabled on Superior Drummer for the hi hat input ? The instructions gave me the impression that the switch on the edge input sends aftertouch messages.

No, you you don't have to configure SD for that. For the configuration purpose you can use MDM MIDI log to monitor for MIDI Aftertouch messages.
Also see http://www.megadrum.info/content/miscellaneous-settings for "Set All EdgeSw".
