just built megadrum and works perfectly i only have one problem and that is the hi-hat...just built an optical hi-hat controller...i see its working good in mct but when i use it with the instrument...i only get the open and close sound...can't get the half open sound...i really want the tssssk sound when you hit the hats and close or open it...but can't get it...what could be the problem?..by the way...a big thanks to dmitri for creating this site and megadrum...one of my greatest achievements is building it...

It is more a question of a sound synthesizer (VST, drum machine and etc) recognising MIDI CC messages for variable HiHat pedal positions, which MegaDrum sends, and interpreting them into different sounds.

so it's with the program i use with megadrum?..i'm using ez drummer...what do you suggest?..

I don't know for sure which VST supports variable HiHats with MIDI CC messages but if remember right it was said that BFD2 does.

I haven't received my Synthex kit yet and I have been using Superior Drummer (EasyDrummer's big brother) so this may be a long shot but I'm pretty sure EasyDrummer can handle CC for hihats.

Here's how it goes in SD (I've only seen screenshots of ED's interface but it looks pretty much the same): You right click on the hihat to select it (you will see a blue glow around it), then you select the HatsCTRL articulation in the lower right portion of the interface and then click the LEARN button below that to activate the MIDI Learn function. Then you lightly press on your hihat pedal and ED "should" learn which CC to use.

If this doesn't work, the interface for ED might work differently (read the manual), you might have to change some settings in your DAW software or you might have to change some settings on your megadrum.

If you are using a registered copy of EZDrummer you can download Toontrack Solo from Toontrack site. Load EZDrummer kit through this as it's much more tweakable and unlike EZDrummer it's supported with updates.

Once loaded select Edrum/CC Offset from the midi menu...Should work OK then

Its probably best if you setup your pedal first by following these instructions (originally from JrummerJ on vdrums.com)


1. Load toontrack solo and select your drumkit.

2. Right click the HiHat to select it.

3. In the "Instrument" Pane (lower right hand corner), go through each Articulation one-by-one and press "remove" to completely clear out all default assignments. (most articulations have multiple assignments, so clear them all out. Doing this step ensures that there are no unanticipated HiHat events)

4. Play the pedal and verify that Superior 2.0 triggers absolutely no sounds.

5. Mapping the pedal controller: Choose the "hatsCtrl"' articulation. Type 'CC4' in the Key field and press enter.

6. Mapping the Open edge zone: Choose the "hatsTrig" articulation. Leave the HiHat pedal open completely. Press "Learn". Strike the edge of the HiHat with stick. Should result in a mapped Key of ''D0". (or if you are viewing MIDI Notes as Numbers: 26)

7. Mapping the Open bow zone: Choose the "hatsTipTrig" articulation. Leave the HiHat pedal open completely. Press "Learn". Strike the bow of the HiHat with stick. Should result in a mapped Key of "A#1". (or if you are viewing MIDI Notes as Numbers: 46)

8. Mapping the Closed edge zone: Choose the "hatsTrig" articulation. Step on the HiHat pedal to close it (important: do that before you Press "Learn"). Press "Learn". Strike the edge of the HiHat with stick. Should result in an additional mapped key of "A#-1" to the "hatsTrig" articulation. (or if you are viewing MIDI Notes as Numbers: 22). You can view all mapped keys to an articulation by right clicking in the Key field.

9. Mapping the Closed bow zone: Choose the "hatsTipTrig" articulation. Step on the HiHat pedal to close it (important: do that before you Press "Learn"). Press "Learn". Strike the bow of the HiHat with stick. Should result in an additional mapped key of "F#1" to the "hatsTipTrig" field. (or if you are viewing MIDI Notes as Numbers: 42)

10. Mapping the Foot chick and Foot splash: Choose the "Closed Pedal" articulation. With the HiHat open, press "Learn". Step on the HiHat to close it. Should result in a mapped key of "G#1". (or if you are viewing MIDI Notes as Numbers: 44)

If you like the way your HiHat is working, Save your MIDI Preset now so that you have a starting point to load just the HiHat (it requires the most tweaking, the rest of the kit is quick and easy to map with the "learn" feature).

Also....after you have first followed the instructions above..


SD2 has some new features to improve hi-hat pedal response.


Right click on Hi-Hat (Should turn Blue)

Select "Mapping" Section from the toolbar

Just above the keyboard is a dropdown menu "Presets"

From this menu select "Midi" then "Pedal Correction"

There you will find different pedal curves to acheive more or less pedal response.

how come when i send setting to my MD the optical hat controller stops working?...but when i set reverse levels to yes it works but not in no...
