CRYLF20M000 - 20.000MHz Low Profile Crystal is good for this project.

Have you turned the trimpot to the end ?
What is the reference of your LCD ?

I have one of the same little blue trimpot that is on the picuture in the kit thread.

It does click when it gets to the end of either side, but nothing between seems to do anything.

I thought it might be the connector as its the first time I've used made a cable with an IDC connector... but after checking it pin by pin it seems that all the wires are in their correct spot.

I'm using http://www.futurlec.com/LED/LCD16x2.shtml (also from futurlec) and it does use the HD44780 controller. I do have another LCD to test with, but its wired directly to the board its on so it would be a pain in the ass... but I can test if it will help!

I am using it for the edrum.info project which is up and running, so I know for sure the other lcd (which is hd44780 as well) works.

I understand you have a tester.
Than while rotating the pot, measure voltage on a pin 3 of the LCD. What do you see?

What is the voltage between the pin 2 and the pin 1 of the LCD ?

I "think" I might have stumbled upon my problem. I'm still at work so I can't test yet but I'm confident this is the issue.

I couldn't find a 6.2k resistor which the schematic calls for so I used a 4.7k and a 1.5k. I hooked them up in paralell without even thinking.

After questioning myself and reading up a little bit to confirm my thoughts I discovered that I'm getting (based on my calcuations, which im sure are wrong! :P) 1.08k total resistance. Regardless if that number is wrong or right.. I'm confident it doesn't have the correct resistance.

Going to change it up as soon as I get home and let you know the results, along with thoes pin readings if it doesn't fix the problem

Unfortunately my resistor theory, while correct didn't help me.

Between pins 2 and 3 it goes from 4.65v to 0 when I spin the pot and pin 1 is 4.55 (I believe, not sure if Im testing the right pins, i went between 1 and 4.. is 1 not connect to gnd??). The voltage doesn't seem to change on pin 1 when I move the pot.

Pin 1 is connected to GND.

Will give the proper voltage as soon as I get home.

Forgot my laptop at work yesterday and all my other computers were down so I had to do everything from my iphone :)

needless to say I got the pins confused, will post correct ones in a few hours.

I'm going to test to see if my windows computers pick it up. Shoudl I get an add hardware dialogue? or just look in midi-ox for it?

Thanks!

Just check your USB device and look in midi-ox.

voltage between pin 1 and 2 is 4.57V (well, between 4.56 and 4.57)

Hardware manager actually did come up and tell me it had found new hardware (mind you it didn't install correctly), and I do see it in my device manager. Mind you it doesn't seem to be working completely correctly but I'm quite confident its a computer config issue..been a Mac guy for the last 4 years now so its all coming back pretty slowly :)

Still nothing on the display however. If you think those voltages are right would you suggest I try my other LCD? maybe its a bad lcd?
